The quintessential Scandinavian dining room - in this case, in the world famous restaurant, Noma, in Copenhagen. Mid Century Modern exquisite furniture is effortlessly at home with antique architecture, heavy texture and simple surroundings. From the blog Solid Frog.
I had the great pleasure of having lunch at the Restaurant Jacobsen in Klampenborg, north of Copenhagen. This is a place where we see a fine patina on classic modern furnishings, designed by Arne Jacobsen, including the flatware…an interesting historical reference and an ode to the beauty of “use and wear.”

There are several ways to look at Scandinavian design today in relation to how it links to the interest in a warm/modern style in the US…..one way is that MCM (Mid Century Modern) need not be a pure theme in a Scandinavian inspired interior, although MCM has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years for good reason, as we know.
A new way to look at Scandinavian design is to see how the Scandinavians mix periods, perhaps even with no MCM in the mix at all. It’s not new - this mixing thing…in our familiar world of design, it’s simply called “eclectic.”
But, watching the mixing being done in the various Scandinavian styles and periods…the word “stunning” comes to mind! Seeing Scandinavian design in this different point of view (for us, not them, they’ve done it for ages) is a fresh, new, look connecting that great cultural and historical thread via wonderful aesthetics.
Point being, there is a WHOLE lot more to Scandinavian design than MCM…mix, shake, stir, delicious.
